Competing in the Cerritos Mini-Tournament on Friday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team split their two games. The Falcons (10-6) opened with an 11-7 win over South Coast Conference foe Chaffey College and followed that with a 10-8 setback against Orange Coast College. The team will now play four games next weekend in the Riverside City Tournament.
Cerritos vs. Chaffey: Facing the Panthers for the second time in less than 48 hours, the Falcons scored the first seven goals of the game, including six in the first quarter to take a commanding lead. Both Raul Muniz (Colbach HS, Mexico) and Mark Arroyo (Schurr HS) scored twice in the first eight minutes to help the team jump out to their huge advantage. Although they didn't score much more the remainder of the game, Cerritos relied on their defensive pressure to help keep Chaffey at bay. Muniz and sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Contreras (Montebello HS) each recorded three steals to lead the team, with 10 different players collecting at least one of the team's 16 in the match. Arroyo finished the game with three goals, while sophomore Bryan Santis (La Serna HS) joined Muniz with a pair of goals, with sophomore Julian Casillas (Harvard-Westlake HS/University of La Verne) assisting on three goals. Contreras made 11 saves in three quarters of work.
Cerritos vs. Orange Coast: In a tight battle, the Falcons led 5-4 in the second quarter, but could not hold onto their lead. The Pirates received some stellar goalkeeping from Gavin Gray, who turned the Falcons away several times with big saves when the game was on the line. Cerritos, trailing 10-8 with 1:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, saw Arturo Ortuno (Universidad La Salle, Mexico) missed a five-meter attempt that would have gotten the team to within a goal. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, and the Falcons suffered the loss. Muniz and Ortuno each scored twice, while Ortuno and freshman Dylan Sun (Cerritos HS) both came up with three steals.
