A trio of Cerritos College women's soccer players have been
selected to play for the Mexican Under-20 National Team. Forwards
Claudia Ibarra and Jasmine Cornejo, along with midfielder Jazmin
Aguas were notified last week that they were going to be added to
the team and flew to Mexico on Sunday before catching a flight to
Chicago with the remainder of the team. The squad will be playing
the Haitian National Team on April 3 at the University of Notre
Dame's Alumni Field. On April 5, the team will take on the Fighting
Irish in the same stadium.
"This is a great honor for those three girls to be selected to play
for the Under-20 National Team," said Falcon head coach Ruben
Gonzalez, who led his team to the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) Division III National Championship
after winning the California Community College Athletic Association
(CCCAA) State Championship in December. It was the second national
title and third state title in the eight-year career for Gonzalez.
"They are not only representing Cerritos College, but they are
representing a country that they also have citizenship. I'm very
proud and excited for them."
Both Cornejo and Aguas will be returning to the Falcons for their
sophomore seasons next year, while Ibarra has given a two-year
commitment to remain with the Mexican National Team. Gonzalez
anticipates Ibarra will return for her sophomore year when her
commitment is over.
The Under-20 Mexican National Team is working toward qualifying for
the next Under-20 World Cup, which will take place in Canada in
2015. Most recently, the Mexican team posted a 3-2 record and
placed third at the 2012 CONCACAF Under-20 Women's World
Championships in Panama.
For the Falcons this season, Aguas was a 1st Team All-South Coast
Conference selection after scoring four goals and adding 12
assists, while Ibarra earned 2nd Team honors. She finished second
on the team in goals (16), assists (13) and points (45), while she
scored both goals in the team's 2-1 state semi-final win over
Sierra College. As for Cornejo, she accounted for nine goals and
four assists.
