Heading into the Southern California Regional Playoffs, both the Cerritos College men's and women's soccer teams were considered to be favorites to advance to the state championships. The men were seeded #2, while the women, who were ranked #1 nationally, held the top seed for the post-season. However, both teams were upset in their first game of the post-season, subsequently ending their seasons. Despite their early exit, both programs were ranked in the top 10 in the final poll of the season by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for Division III (non-scholarship) colleges.
The Falcon women's team, who won their sixth straight South Coast Conference title, held the #1 position for the majority of the season, and won their first 22 games of the season. But a 1-0 home loss to San Bernardino Valley College in the final regular season game was followed by a 1-0 upset loss at home against Orange Coast College to end their year. Cerritos (22-2-0) finished the season ranked #9 in the country, which marks the fourth time in the last five years the team has been ranked in the Top 10. One of their wins was a 4-0 decision over Monroe (NY) Community College, who ended the year 13-1-1 and ranked #3 in the country.
As for the men, they were ranked as high as #2 before their first meeting against eventual national champion Mt. San Antonio. The Falcons, who finished in second place in the conference (behind the Mounties), concluded the season ranked #10 in the country with a 17-3-2 record. Two of the losses came at the hands of Mt. SAC, while a 1-0 setback at home against Golden West College in the second round of the playoffs (after a first round bye) accounted for the other loss. One of the team's wins was a 5-3 decision over Oxnard College, who ended the team 15-2-6 and ranked #8 in the country. Cerritos also tied Hartnell College, 3-3, who finished the year ranked #3 with a 19-3-3 record. The Falcons have finished the season ranked in the Top 10 in the country in five of the last six years.
