CERRITOS PICKS UP A PAIR OF CONFERENCE WINS

On the strength of seven first place finishes, including three from freshman Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) and a pair by freshman Joselin Figueroa (Paramount HS), the Cerritos College women's swimming team picked up a pair of South Coast Conference wins on Friday. The Falcons (4-2) defeated East Los Angeles College, 151-124 and recorded a 145-125 in over host Pasadena City College. The team will now conclude their conference dual meets on Friday when they travel to El Camino College to face the host Warriors, as well as Rio Hondo College.

Gabayeron picked up wins in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.29), 500-yard freestyle (5:32.61) and 100-yard IM (1:03.68) to help the Falcons with their two team victories. In both the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle wins, her times were 12 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, while she edged Pasadena City's Mikela Velasquez by less than a second to win the 100-yard IM. As for Figueroa, she posted a time of 31.43 to win the 50-yard backstroke, with sophomore teammate Brittany Hart (Mayfair HS) finished a close third in 33.21, while Figueroa held off Paige Watroba (1:09.88) of PCC in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.22. Figueroa also took fourth in the 50-yard butterfly in 32.39.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Figueroa, Gabayeron, freshman Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) and sophomore Melinda Guevara (Cerritos HS) posted a first place time of 2:00.59, while Vela also won the diving with 154.70 points. Guevara also recorded a pair of second place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (27.15) and 100-yard freestyle (1:00.88), while Vela also came in second place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:43.37. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS), Hart, sophomore Diana Medina (Pioneer HS) and Guevara finished in second place in 4:17.77.
