Looking for their first shutout since 2015, the Cerritos College football team kept host Moorpark College off the scoreboard for the full 60 minutes in a 23-0 win on Saturday night. It was their first shutout since a 28-0 win over Bakersfield College on October 24, 2015. The Falcons (1-1) will now host Santa Barbara City College next Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Falcon Stadium.
In the first offensive series for the Raiders (0-2), a fourth down play resulted in a safety and a quick 2-0 lead for Cerritos. The score would remain that way until late in the second quarter after the Falcon defense forced a fumble in the red zone with sophomore linebacker Adrian Castro (La Serna HS) recovering the ball at the Cerritos 22-yard line.
After freshman quarterback Jeremiah Calvin (Mayfair HS) connected with sophomore wide receiver Saxon Va'a (Banning HS) for 16 yards on the first play of the drive, the offense stalled at midfield and were faced with a fourth-and one. Sophomore running back Josh Cason (Long Beach Poly HS) gained three yards to keep the drive alive. Then, on third-and-two Calvin found sophomore wide receiver Malachi Wright (Mayfair HS) for a 22-yard gain and were in the red zone. Three plays later, Cason capped off the drive with a three-yard touchdown with 32 second left in the second quarter and gave the Falcons a 9-0 lead heading into halftime.
On their first drive of the second half, the Falcons drove 59 yards on nine plays to increase their lead to 16-0. Once again, Cason rushed for a first down on a key third down, while a pass interference penalty against Moorpark kept the drive going and put the ball at the Raiders 5-yard line. Calvin then hit freshman wide receiver Charles Clinton II (Long Beach Poly HS) on the next play for a touchdown.
After the Cerritos defense shut down Moorpark once again, the offense continued to roll and improved their lead to 23-0. Va'a returned a Raiders punt into Moorpark territory, where the Falcons would end up rolling the dice on fourth down once again and converted. Calvin hit Clinton for an 18-yard gain on fourth-and-nine, which put the ball at the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Clinton caught his second touchdown of the game, this time from seven yards out.
Although the offense was limited to just 278 yards of total offense, they took advantage of good field position because of the stellar Falcon defense.
Along with the play of Castro, sophomore linebacker Rocky Jack (Summer Creek, TX HS/Orange Coast College) had a solid all-around performance. He recorded a pair of quarterback hurries, as well as an interception and a tackle for loss. As a team, Cerritos checked in with seven tackles for loss, while they forced three Moorpark fumbles.
