Falcons Back in First Place with Statement Win Over LA Southwest

Cerritos College delivered a championship-caliber performance on Friday, defeating Los Angeles Southwest 86–69 in a South Coast Conference showdown that put the Falcons back atop the conference standings.

With first place on the line, Cerritos rose to the occasion behind an explosive offensive effort and a dominant presence on the glass, shooting 51.9 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Cougars 38–27 to secure the pivotal victory at home.

Dorian Tate led all scorers with a career night, pouring in 26 points on an efficient 11-for-15 shooting, while adding a double-double with 10 rebounds. Tate controlled the paint from start to finish, setting the tone early as the Falcons established control of the game.

The Falcons showcased impressive balance throughout the lineup, highlighted by Elijah Gelin, who came off the bench to score 23 points, including 12-of-15 from the free-throw line, providing a steady scoring presence during key stretches. Blake Brewer and Isaac Sowell chipped in nine points apiece, with Sowell adding six rebounds in just 14 minutes of action.

Cerritos also excelled in sharing the ball, finishing with 13 assists, while applying consistent pressure on the defensive end. The Falcons forced 17 turnovers and converted those opportunities into momentum-shifting points that kept Southwest from finding any sustained rhythm.

After a competitive opening stretch, Cerritos pulled away midway through the second half, using a combination of inside scoring, transition buckets, and trips to the free-throw line to build a double-digit lead. The Falcons' depth and physicality proved decisive as they closed the game with composure and confidence.

With the win, Cerritos sits in first place in the South Coast Conference, continuing a strong conference run and sending a clear message as the postseason approaches.
