ARIANA WRIGHT SETS RECORD IN 100 METERS

Back in 2002 and 2003, April Brown was a two-time state champion in the 100 meters for the Cerritos College women's track and field team and set the school record with a time of 11.41 in her freshman season. On Saturday it the Tiny Lister Invitational at Cal State Los Angeles, Falcon freshman Ariana Wright (Westminster HS) broke Brown's record time in the 100 meters with a clocking of 11.35, which also earned her the Collegiate Athlete of the Meet. As a team, Cerritos turned in some strong marks, as they prepare for the final few meets of the season. They will now compete in the Mt. San Antonio Relays on Saturday.

For Wright, who ran an 11.93 in the first meet of the season, she bested all 48 runners in posting her record-breaking time of 11.35. She also ran the anchor leg of the 400-meter relay team that finished in second place with a time of 47.16. The quartet consisted of freshman Khadijah Hall (Gahr HS), along with sophomores Vernasha Poole (Cheyenne, NV HS) and Blair Allen (Lynwood HS), with Wright running the anchor leg. Allen also won her heat in the 400 meters with a time of 58.66, which was also the eighth fastest time out of 47 runners, while Poole won her heat in the 200 meters (24.99) and it was also the eighth fastest time with 46 competitors.

Sophomore Lily Trinh (Fountain Valley HS) won her heat of the 100-meter HH in a time of 15.72, which was also the fifth fastest time on the day, as well as coming in fifth place overall in the 400-meter IH with a clocking of 1:05.58. In field events, sophomore thrower Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo HS) came in third place in the discus with a distance of 49.15 meters, while her throw of 43.23 meters in the hammer earned her third place in her heat and ninth place on the day. Freshman high jumper Mariah Harris (Leuzinger HS) tied for third place with a height of 1.54 meters, while the duo of sophomore Regina DeVaughn (Bellflower HS) and freshman Kristy Hardiman (Carson HS) placed ninth and 11th overall in the long jump with leaps that cleared 4.90 meters and 4.75 meters, respectively.
