Hosting the one-day Cerritos Mini-Tournament, the Falcons men's water polo team took on a pair of opponents. In their first game, they defeated Citrus College (22-11) and followed that with a tough 20-18 double overtime loss against San Diego Mesa College. Cerritos (11-7) will now resume South Coast Conference play when they host El Camino College at 3:00 p.m. On Wednesday.
Cerritos vs. Citrus: The win over the Owls marked the fourth game in a row that the team scored over 20 goals. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead on goals by five different players and then cruised to a 12-5 lead at halftime. In their six-goal second period, goals were scored by six different players, which has been a trademark with the Falcons program for years. Julian Almanza (St. John Bosco HS) went on to lead the team with four goals in the win, while Christian Acosta (Schurr HS), Marco Uribe (St. John Bosco HS), Isaiah Wright (Whittier HS) and Guillermo De La Mora (La Serna HS) all scored three times. Almanza and Ruben Martinez (Western HS) each assisted on a trio of goals, while the defensive effort was paced by Wright and his four steals. All three goalies saw action and combined for 10 saves.
Cerritos vs. San Diego Mesa: In one of their most intense games that could have possible playoff seeding implications, the Falcons and Olympians battled into overtime. The 20-18 loss would be tough for Cerritos, who led, 14-9 early in the fourth period after scoring four consecutive goals to open their lead. But SD Mesa would end up scoring eight times in the fourth period, including six of the final seven goals in regulation to send the game into overtime. The Olympians outscored Cerritos, 3-1 in the two overtime periods to post the win. The Falcons defeated SD Mesa, 11-10 in their first meeting. The duo of Acosta and Uribe each scored six goals, while Alamza checked in with three goals, three assists and four steals. De La Mora assisted on six of the Falcons goals, with goalie Aiden Parra (California HS) posting 13 saves.
