Hosting the Cerritos Mini-Tournament on Saturday, the Cerritos College men's water polo team secured a pair of wins. The Falcons (14-7) opened with a 17-5 win over Southwestern College and followed that win a 23-7 victory over Santa Monica College. It was the second win this season over both schools. The team will get 11 days off before they host crosstown rival Long Beach City College on October 22 at 3:00 p.m. in a battle for first place in the South Coast Conference.
Cerritos vs. Southwestern: Six different scorers helped the Falcons open up an early 7-1 lead in the first period, while the teams went on to each score three times by intermission for a 10-4 Cerritos advantage. Christian Acosta (Schurr HS) scored two of his team-high four goals in the first stanza, while Julian Almanza (St. John Bosco HS), Drew Gilbert (Garden Grove HS) and Isaiah Wright (Whittier HS) all scored twice in the first half. The Falcons shut out the Jaguars (9-9) in the third period and received goals from Almanza and Christian Acosta (Schurr HS), while five players all scored in the fourth period to close out the convincing win. Almanza had a strong all-around game with his three goals, four assists and five steals, while four players added two goals. Aiden Parra (California HS) turned away seven shots and contributed three steals, with Tripp Johnson (Kennedy HS) recording four saves in his one period of action in goal.
Cerritos vs. Santa Monica: Picking up where they left off, the Falcons jumped out to an early first period lead and never looked back. They led the Corsairs, 7-1 after the first period and saw that advantage swell to 11-1 before their opponents had a response. Continuing to be true to their style of play, seven different players scored at least two goals in the game and were led by Almanza with his six goals, as well as adding four assists. Jaylen Wade (La Mirada HS) recorded four goals with two assists and two steals, while the trio of Ruben Martinez (Western HS), Brice Huxen (St. John Bosco HS) and Max Lucero (Whittier HS) all scored three times. Defensively, the Falcons recorded 21 steals with 10 players posting at least one. It was also the fifth time in the last eight games that Cerritos scored at least 20 goals.
