Over the weekend, the Cerritos College men's water polo team competed in the Golden West/Orange Coast Tournament and played in a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. They opened with a tough 13-11 loss to Los Angeles Valley College and then then defeated South Coast Conference opponent Rio Hondo College, 17-1. On Saturday, the competition moved to Orange Coast College, where the Falcons opened with a 14-10 win over another conference opponent, El Camino College. That put them in the 11th place game of the tournament, where they defeated #8-ranked Saddleback College, 10-9.
Cerritos will now host Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. with the winner earning the #2-seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
Cerritos vs. Los Angeles Valley: Taking on the Monarchs, who defeated the Falcons earlier in the season and have now won five of their last six meetings, the teams were locked in a tight battle until the end. Tied 4-4 after the first period and 7-7 at halftime, LA Valley took a 9-8 lead into the fourth period. An early fourth quarter goal from Christian Acosta (Schurr HS) tied the game at 9-9, until the Monarchs responded with three consecutive goals to open a 12-9 advantage. Two tallies from Isaiah Wright (Whittier HS) drew the team to within 12-11, but the Monarchs sealed the win on a goal with five seconds left. Julian Almanza (St. John Bosco HS) led the Falcons with five goals and assisted on two others, while Acosta and Wright each added a pair of goals. As for Wright, he also assisted on four goals, with Almanza posting three steals. In goal, Aiden Parra (California HS) made 10 saves and also had a pair of steals and an assist.
Cerritos vs. Rio Hondo: Facing a familiar South Coast Conference foe, the Falcons scored the first 15 goals in a comfortable win. The win allowed others to see more playing time, including both of the team's other two goalies, who saw time in the field. Geo Fagiani (Schurr HS) scored three times in his first action as a field player this season, while he also assisted on a pair of goals, while Tripp Johnson (Kennedy HS) answered the call as a field player and scored a goal in the fourth period. Brice Huxen (St. John Bosco HS) led the team with a trio of goals, while Christian Acosta (Schurr HS), who played in goal for the fourth period, scored twice. Also picking up a pair of goals were Ruben Martinez (Western HS), Jaylen Wade (La Mirada HS) and Cruz Cassayre (Warren HS), with Parra turning away 12 shots and also assisted on three goals. The Falcons have won 21 games in a row against the Roadrunners, with their last victory over Cerritos coming in an 11-10 decision on September 24, 2003.
Cerritos vs. El Camino: Taking on the Warriors for the third time this season, the Falcons found themselves trailing, 4-1 and then 7-4. However, Cerritos received a goal from Wright with 1:22 left in the first half to trail 7-5 going into intermission. The second half was a completely different story, as the Falcons took an 8-7 lead in the third quarter after a pair of goals from Acosta and another from Almanza. After El Camino tied the game at 8-8, Amanza gave the team the lead once again with a power play goal, with Wright and Huxen adding goals for an 11-8 advantage. It became a close 11-10 game with time running out in the fourth period, but goals from Acosta, Martinez and Almanza closed out the win. Acosta finished the game with four goals and drew four exclusions, while Almanza posted three goals a four assists.
Cerritos vs. Saddleback: Looking for revenge from an earlier loss to the Bobcats, the Falcons came away with a huge win, as it will affect the seeding for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Saddleback leading, 6-5 in the third period, Acosta and Almanza both scored, with the latter coming with just six seconds left in the period. Cerritos also scored at the buzzer right at the end of the half. An early Saddleback goal to start the fourth period was followed by a pair of scores from Acosta, who accounted for six of the team's goals in the match. The Bobcats came back to knot the game at 9-9 with 3:49 remaining, with the Falcons taking the lead for good on their next possession, as Acosta found the back of the next once again. Neither team would be able to score the rest of the way, with the Falcons defense coming up big over and over, as Almanza posted a pair of steals and Parra recorded two of his seven saves after the go-ahead goal.
