In one of the largest tournaments of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team edged out host Fresno City College for the championship of the Bill Musick Open. Although the event was an "open", where official team scores aren't kept, the calculations showed that the Falcons compiled 146.5 team points, compared to the 145.5 team points for Fresno City. Cerritos, who had two individual champions and 11 placers at the open, will compete in the East LA Brawl next Saturday, which is their final tournament before the Southern California Championships.
At 141 pounds, freshman Isaac Gonzalez (Western HS) breezed through four opponents to win his championship. Seeded #1 for the tournament, Gonzalez posted a pair of technical fall wins before he earned a 7-1 win over Sergio Porras of Palomar College in the semifinals. He led, 3-1 after the first period and after adding an escape point in the second period, capped off the scoring with a takedown with just 21 seconds left in the match to seal the win. In the championships, Gonzalez earned a 10-3 win over Bakersfield College's Luis Acosta-Tackett. It was the same scenario as it was in the semis with Gonzalez taking a 4-1 lead into the final two minutes. After Acosta-Tackett recorded an escape point, Gonzalez took him down again with 1:07 left and then added another for good measure with just 16 clicks left on the clock.
It took five wins for freshman 174-pound Abraham Galicia (St. John Bosco HS) to win his championship, which included three wins by pin. Surrendering just two points through the first three matches, Galicia needed 4:32 to pin Ivan Natceli of Palomar College in the semifinals. A pair of takedowns in the first period helped Galicia open a 6-2 lead, while his takedown with 1:01 remaining in the second period put him in position for the pin, which he accomplished with 28 seconds left in the period. Taking on Nathaniel Dominguez of Moorpark College in the championship match, Galicia almost ended the match in the first period and picked up four near-fall points as time ran out. After escaping just three seconds into the second period, he scored a takedown 12 seconds later and then finished off Dominguez for the win with a pin.
A trio of Falcons finished in third place in their respective weight classes, which included sophomore 125-pound Adrian Jimenez (Marina HS), who opened with three consecutive wins before he dropped a 14-3 major decision to Alijah Ortiz of Fresno City College in the semifinals. Taking on unattached Isaac Antunez in the third place match, Jimenez led 5-4 heading into the third period. He earned a takedown 49 seconds into the third period and was awarded another point when Antunez was called for stalling for the second time in the match. Antunez escaped with 22 seconds left and was looking for a takedown to win the match, but Jimenez was able to hold him off to finish in third place.
Also seeded at the top of the bracket at 149 pounds, freshman Sean Otero (Norwalk HS) earned three wins, including a 11-3 major decision over Nicholas Rodriguez of Palomar College to advance to the semifinals. Otero then faced Colton Silva of Simpson University and tailed, 1-0 going into the third period. Otero tied the match with an escape point, but surrendered a takedown to Silva with 54 seconds left. He slipped away for another point and had 33 seconds to pull out a win with a takedown, but could not secure one and fell, 4-2. He finished in third place when Fresno City's Jesus Loreto had to default due to an injury. Sophomore Noah Zuniga (Trabuco Hills HS) also earned three consecutive wins at 157 pounds to reach the semifinals. He then dropped a 17-0 decision to Fresno City College's Roman Gutierrez in the match and capped off his day with an 8-6 win over teammate Marcel Blake (South Torrance HS) to take third place. In the match, Zuniga recorded a pair of takedowns against his teammate and took a 6-2 lead into the second period. Taking the down position, Blake quickly escaped and then took down Zuniga with 1:39 left in the period to tie the match. Zuniga only needed eight seconds to escape and then added another escape point in the third period to close out the scoring.
Those who also placed for the Falcons in the tournament included Elijah Flores (Santa Fe HS), who came in fourth place at 133 pounds, while sophomore Jake Topartzer (San Juan Hills HS) placed fifth at 141 pounds, which included him winning all three of his consolation matches. At 125 pounds, sophomore Jesse Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) competed six times and finished in sixth place, while sophomore 184-pound Farzad Hashimi (El Dorado HS) placed seventh on the day.
