With wins in seven of the 10 matches on Wednesday night, the Cerritos College wrestling team secured a 33-15 Southwest Conference victory over host Palomar College. The Falcons (8-2, 3-1) have one more conference match remaining and will travel to Santa Ana College next Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. match.
Of their seven wins over the Comets, three were by technical fall and two were by pins. At 125 pounds, sophomore Adrian Jimenez (Marina HS/Missouri Valley College) opened a 14-1 lead after the first period, which included a pair of four-point near falls. He closed out the match early in the second period with another four-point near fall for an 18-1 victory. The Falcons started building momentum, as sophomore 133-pound Elijah Flores (Santa Fe HS) needed just 34 seconds to pin Tyler Williams.
At 141 pounds, freshman Isaac Gonzalez (Western HS) earned a 20-3 win over Elias Basilio, as he was able to earn all of his points before the end of the first period. Each time he took down Basilio, he cut him loose and then took him down again, while he also earned a pair of four-point near falls to his point total. Sophomore Noah Zuniga (Trabuco Hills HS) opened up a 9-4 lead through the first period at 157 pounds, and finished off the match with a pin 4:26 into the match.
Another early lead paved the way for a technical fall at 174 pounds, with sophomore Donovan Chavez (Downey HS) leading 12-0 through the first three minutes, while a takedown early in the second period secured his 15-0 victory. The closest match of the night came at 184 pounds with sophomore Farzad Hashimi (El Dorado HS) holding a 9-7 lead over Sebastian Anderson through two periods. After starting the third period down, Hashimi earned an escape point, while a two-point reversal by Anderson put the score at 10-9 in favor of Hashimi. In what turned out to be the winning point, Anderson was called for his second stall of the match, awarding Hashimi another point, while the riding time point from Anderson capped the match off at 11-10.
Freshman 285-pound Simon Flores (Paloma Valley HS) finished the match with an 11-4 win, which consisted of takedowns in each period to help open a lead and onto the win.
