In their second big tournament of the season, the Cerritos College wrestling team had a quartet of individual champions and 12 placers at the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday. On the day, the team finished with 162 team points to finish ahead of rival Mt. San Antonio College, who had 147 team points. The Falcons open their SCWA Southwest Conference schedule on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Rio Hondo College.
At 125 pounds, sophomore Jesse Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) was one of two champions for Cerritos on the day, as he defeated four opponents to win the weight class. After a couple of close wins, Hernandez posted a tight 9-7 win over Nathan Kaiser of Lemoore College in the semifinals and capped off the day with a 9-5 victory over Camilo Ramirez of Mt. San Antonio College in the championship match. Sophomore teammate Adrian Jimenez (Marina HS/Missouri Valley University) advanced to the semifinals, but was pinned by Ramirez and then after another loss in the consolation round, secured fifth place when Logan Hansen of Moorpark College defaulted in the fifth place match.
Freshman Isaac Gonzalez (Western HS) was the team's other individual champion, as he picked up four wins at 141 pounds. After a first round win. Gonzalez handed Zain Kahn of Mtr. San Antonio a loss by pin in 4:57 and followed that up with a major decision over Andre Garcia of Santa Ana College, 20-7 in the semifinals. Taking on Sergio Porras in the finals, Gonzalez registered a 13-6 win for the title. Also competing in the weight class, sophomore sophomore Jake Topartzer (San Juan Hills HS) finished in sixth place after opening with a pair of wins. He battled back in the consolation rounds with a 17-1 win over sophomore teammate Noe Cruz (Maywood Academy HS), but then lost his next two matches, including a nail-biting 11-10 loss to Josiah Sandoval of Sacrament City College in the fifth place match.
Competing at 149 pounds, sophomore Spencer Parry (Yorba Linda HS) took care of five opponents to capture the championship. After a pair of technical fall wins, Parry registered a major decision over Angel Salgado of Victor Valley College to advance to the semifinals. There, he faced top-seeded Emilio Medina of Moorpark College and came away with an 8-5 win, where he led 7-1 after two periods and held on for the victory. In the finals, Parry needed just 48 seconds to pin Nicholas Rodriguez of Palomar College. Also winning their weight was freshman 174-pound Abraham Galicia (St. John Bosco HS), who pinned three of his opponents. After two wins, which included a 21-7 technical fall, Galicia (pictured, above with the other three champions) pinned Bakersfield College's Giovanni Ruiz in 1:10 and finished the day pinning Ivan Natceli of Palomar College in just 51 seconds in the championship match.
Two others reached the finals, but came up short in their championship match. At 157 pounds, freshman Marcel Blake (South Torrance HS) won three in a row, including an 8-3 win over Jayden Espinoza of Mt. SAC in the semifinals. Taking on Larry Cruz of Rio Hondo College in the championship match, Blake was pinned in 1:01 and settled for second place. It was the same for sophomore 184-pound Farzad Hashimi (El Dorado HS), who earned an 18-10 win over Munther Saleh of Sacramento City before he pulled out a 4-3 decision in the semifinals against Juan Nuno of Lemoore. Hashimi finished in second place after Mt. SAC's Roman Loya pinned him in 1:49.
Also placing for the Falcons were sophomore 133-pound Elijah Flores (Santa Fe HS), who came in fourth place, with the Falcons have three place at 197 pounds. Freshman Brian Valdespino (Downey HS) battled through the consolation brackets and finished in fourth place, with freshman Matin Ghanavat (Capistrano Valley HS) taking fifth at 197 pounds and sophomore Dennis Iraheta (University HS) coming in sixth place in the same weight.
