Falcons shine at SoCal Championships, send 26 athletes to state meet

The Cerritos College men's and women's track and field programs delivered an impressive showing at the Southern California Championships held May 2 and May 9 at Bakersfield College, as the women's team captured a runner-up finish while the men placed fourth overall against the top competition in the region.

The Falcon women totaled 100 team points to secure second place behind Mt. SAC, while the Cerritos men scored 72 points to finish fourth overall in the team standings.

Cerritos combined for seven Southern California individual and relay championships and qualified 26 athletes for the upcoming 3C2A State Championships.

Leading the way for the Falcons was sophomore thrower Mackenzie Monson, who earned Southern California titles in both the discus and shot put. Monson won the discus with a mark of 46.37 meters and added a championship performance in the shot put at 13.22 meters.

In the women's hammer throw, Aysia Mallory Feliciano captured the SoCal title with a toss of 47.91 meters, while Damian Salas claimed the men's hammer throw championship after recording a mark of 52.05 meters.

Distance runner Juan Flores added another championship for the Falcons after winning the men's steeplechase in 9:32.00, while Joshua Morales captured the men's 10,000-meter title with a winning time of 32:05.65.

On the track, Nyla Nolan continued her strong postseason by winning the women's 800 meters in 2:15.07 before helping the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Nolan, Angel Corral, Jewel Scott and Deona Standifer claim a SoCal championship in 3:50.33.

The Falcons will now turn their attention to the 3C2A State Championships, which will take place May 15-16 at Mt. San Antonio College.
