On Saturday afternoon, the Cerritos College women's cross country team opened the season at Buffalo Park near Northern Arizona University of the George Kyle Classic. The Falcons, who were the lone school from California, took eighth place with a team score of 271 team points. The team will compete at the Oxnard Invitational next Friday.

Running the 2.54-mile course, Cerritos saw Jayla Barnwell (Warren HS) as the first member of the team to complete the course, as she placed 58th out of 98 total runners in a time of 18:23.5. The Falcons were able to block their next two runners, as Monserrat Malo (Warren HS) posted a 63rd place time of 19:00.8, while Esther Gonzalez (Warren HS) was right behind in 64th place with a time of 19:05.1. Viviana Martinez (Downey HS) was the next Cerritos runner to cross the finish line, as her time of 19:34.8 put her in 68th place, while Samantha Thompson (Downey HS) closed out the team scoring with her 76th place time of 20:29.7.

Also competing on the day for the Falcons were Jessica Jordan (Narbonne HS; 21:14.0; 81st place) and Maricela Herrera (Valencia HS; 21:39.6; 84th place).
