With the regular season winding down, the Cerritos College softball team posted a 7-2 South Coast Conference win over visiting Compton College on Monday afternoon. The Falcons (28-10, 17-6) will finish in a tie for third place in the competitive South Coast Conference and close out their regular season schedule on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. against East Los Angeles College.

Cerritos scored five times in the first two innings to take an early lead. In the bottom of the first inning, freshman outfielder Savannah Gonzalez (Whittier HS) led off with a walk, stole second base and moved to third base on a base hit by freshman third baseman Marley Cortez (Gahr HS). After a walk to sophomore outfielder Morgan Fontela (Long Beach Millikan HS) loaded the bases, Gonzalez scored on an error when Compton catcher Angela Banderos dropped the throw to the plate in an attempts for a force out at home. A two-run single by sophomore catcher Vicky Najera (El Rancho HS) drove in the team's other two runs in the inning.

Freshman second baseman Amarie Encarnacion (Norwalk HS) led off the second inning with a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a single by Gonzalez. After Gonzalez stole second base, Cortez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while another Compton error led to the fifth run of the game for the Falcons.

Freshman pitcher Tatyana Cortez (La Serna HS) allowed just one hit through the first four innings, before Compton picked up single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. She retired them in order in the seventh inning, which included a pair of strikeouts, which gave her six for the game.

Gonzalez finished the game going 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored, while Fontela drew a pair of walks and Najera drove in two runs. Encarnacion was 1-for-1 with an RBI, run scored and stolen base.
