Traveling up north this weekend, the Cerritos College women's water polo team opened the first day of the West Valley Invitational with a pair of wins. The Falcons (3-3) opened with a strong 20-10 win over Las Positas College and capped off their day with a 14-6 victory over Modesto College. The team came back on Saturday and recorded an exciting 11-10 win over the host Vikings before ending the weekend with a 16-4 loss to Cuesta College.
The Falcons will play twice on Wednesday, as they open South Coast Conference play by hosting Pasadena City College at 3:00 p.m. and then take on visiting Santa Monica College in a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game.
Cerritos vs. Las Positas: In their early-morning game, the Falcons allowed the first goal of the game, but went on to score seven of the next nine goals to open up a big lead. During that stretch, freshmen Monserrat Rodriguez (Western HS) and Luna Huitron (Warren HS) each scored twice to put Cerritos out front. Coming out of halftime leading 10-5, Cerritos accounted for five consecutive goals to start the third period, with Huitron getting things started with a pair of goals. By the end of the game, Huitron had a team-high six goals, while Rodriguez had a superb all-around game with four goals, three assists and six steals. Nine different players scored for the Falcons, while freshman goalkeeper Jayden Starr-Smith (Buena Park HS) turned away 11 shots in the win.
Cerritos vs. Modesto: Continuing their fast start to a game, the Falcons jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period, with freshman Jasmine Escorcia (Western HS) scoring the last three goals, while Isabella Ochoa (California HS) recorded the first two. Escorsia picked up two more goals in the second period, as the Falcons took a 10-3 lead into intermission. One of the defensive keys to the game was Starr-Smith, who made saves on all three penalty shots taken by the Pirates and finished with 15 saves. Escorsia scored on six of her seven shots in the game, while Ochoa had three goals in the win. Along with the defense by Starr-Smith, the Falcons recorded 15 steals, which allowed them to keep Modesto at bay.
Cerritos vs. West Valley: Facing the Vikings, who finished in fourth place at the 3C2A State Championships last season, the Falcons were able to pull off the upset. Staying close the whole game, Cerritos turned a 7-5 deficit into an 8-7 lead in the third period after Huitron, Rodriguez and sophomore Valeria Barboza (Paramount HS) all scored in the final 2:20 of the period to put the team in front. After the Vikings tied the game to start the fourth period, tallies from Escorcia and Huitron gave the team a two-goal lead with 5:29 left on the clock. Cerritos scored just one more goal the rest of the game, but it turned out to be the game-winner from Ochoa with 1:26 remaining. Starr-Smith made nine saves in the win, while Ochoa paced the team with four goals and five big steals. Escorcia assisted on three goals and added a pair of saves.
Cerritos vs. Cuesta: The weekend ended with the Falcons unable to keep pace with the Cougars. They allowed nine first half goals and just couldn't get things going. Four different players scored, including Starr-Smith at the end of the first period with one second remaining. She posted 12 saves in the game, with Rodriguez leading the defensive with five steals.
