With the winner securing the #2-seed for the South Coast Conference Tournament next week, the Cerritos College women's water polo team came up short in an 11-7 decision against visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday. The Falcons (12-12, 5-2) will be the #3-seeded team for the tournament, which will be hosted at the Falcon Aquatic Center, with the women's games starting on Friday.
A goal by Isabella Ochoa (California HS) early in the second period tied the game at 4-4, until the Mounties scored six consecutive goals to take a comfortable lead. Cerritos saw four of their shots during that span hit the crossbar, while they had several other scoring chances not come through.
In the fourth period, a goal by Layla Gonzalez (Anaheim HS) snapped the scoring drought, while Monserrat Rodriguez (Western HS) and Ochoa each scored later in the fourth to account for the final scoring on the day.
Ochoa scored three of the team's seven goals, with Rodriguez added two goals. Goalie Jayden-Starr Smith (Buena Park HS) was aggressive in goal and recorded five steals to go along with her six saves, with Camila Oliveira (Cerritos HS) finishing with three steals and assisted on two goals.
