On Friday, the Cerritos College women's water polo team hosted a pair of schools for the one-day Cerritos Mini-Tournament. The Falcons opened the day with a solid 18-5 win over Southwestern College and followed that with a 10-4 win against Ventura College. Cerritos (8-5), ranked #9 in the state, will now host El Camino College on Wednesday ay 4:15 p.m. in a South Coast Conference match.
Cerritos vs. Southwestern: After the teams traded the first four goals of the match, the Falcons went on to score the next seven goals to open a sizable lead. The duo of Ceci Ortiz-Miranda (El Rancho HS) and Monserrat Rodriguez (Western HS) both scored consecutive goals in the first period to help take the big lead. Including the second period, the Falcons recorded nine consecutive goals and had nine goal scorers by the end of the game. The trio of Fiona Glynn (Cerritos HS), Rodriguez and Ortiz-Miranda all led the way with their three goals each, with goalie Jayden-Starr Smith (Buena Park HS) making 12 saves and even assisted on three goals and made four steals. Ortiz-Miranda also recorded three helpers.
Cerritos vs. Ventura: Facing the Pirates in their second game of the day, the Falcons broke a 1-1 tie after the first period on consecutive goals from Jasmine Escorcia (Western HS), Isabella Ochoa (California HS) and a pair of tallies from Luna Huitron (Warren HS) to open a 5-1 advantage. Smith, who made 12 saves in both games, turned Ventura away on consecutive possessions after Cerritos started turning up their offense. Isabel Guillen (Whittier HS) and Camila Oliveira (Cerritos HS) started the scoring in the second half, as the team extended their lead to 8-2, as they cruised to the win. Huitron and Oliveira each finished with two goals, while Ochoa assisted on three of the goals. Escorcia led the defensive effort with five steals.
