Behind a four-run second inning and a dominant showing on the mound, Cerritos College cruised to an 8-1 victory over Southwestern College on Saturday afternoon at Kincaid Field.
The Falcons totaled 14 hits in the contest and received a strong start from freshman Logan Hunt, who evened his record at 1-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first inning, Cerritos broke through in the bottom of the second. Wyatt Ormonde scored the game's first run when Andrew Perez reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases still loaded, Tyler Peshke lined a two-run single to center field to bring home Perez and CJ Berthon. Mateo Heredia followed with an RBI single to right field to score Jose Perez and cap the four-run frame for a 4-0 lead.
Cerritos added another run in the third inning when Berthon crossed the plate on a wild pitch, extending the advantage to 5-0.
The Falcons put the game out of reach in the fourth inning. After Ormonde and Brody Cuellar reached base, Berthon blasted a three-run home run to left field to give Cerritos an 8-0 cushion. Berthon finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored to pace the offense.
Jose Perez and Luke Crowder each collected three hits, while Peshke went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Heredia also added two hits and an RBI as the Falcons produced seven RBI in the contest.
On the mound, Hunt worked six innings, allowing one run on seven hits while walking three. He did not allow Southwestern to score until the fifth inning, when Josh Hughes delivered an RBI single for the Jaguars' lone run.
Jake Fowler closed out the game with three shutout innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out one.
Cerritos will return to action against Pasadena City College next week as South Coast Conference play begins.
