The Cerritos College Athletics softball team exploded for eight runs in the first inning and cruised to a dominant 12-1 victory over Compton College in a five-inning contest.
The Falcons wasted no time setting the tone, sending 12 hitters to the plate in the opening frame and taking advantage of timely hitting and patient at-bats to build an early lead they would never surrender. Cerritos opened the scoring when Marley Cortez delivered an RBI single to bring home Alyssa Avila. The Falcons continued to pile on runs as Carissa Amaya was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Bella Salas drew an RBI walk, and Sienna Contreras added a run-scoring single. The rally continued when Mia Star Miramontes reached on an error that plated another run, followed by an RBI single from Irma Gonzalez. Cortez capped the inning with a two-run double down the right-field line, giving Cerritos a commanding 8-0 lead after the first inning.
Cortez powered the Falcons offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Amaya also had a big day at the plate, driving in three runs including a two-run double in the third inning. Gonzalez added a perfect 2-for-2 performance with two runs scored and an RBI, while Avila crossed the plate three times and stole a base to help spark the offense. Cerritos added four more runs in the third inning on sacrifice flies and clutch hits, including a two-run double from Amaya to push the lead to 12-1.
Inside the circle, Miramontes earned the victory, allowing one run on five hits over two innings while striking out one. Riley Davison followed with two scoreless innings in relief, and Tatyana Cortez closed the game with a clean fifth inning. The Falcons' pitching staff combined to limit Compton to six hits and just one run while issuing only one walk.
The Falcons will take on the Orange Coast College Pirates on Saturday in a non-conference match-up on the road.
