Cerritos College delivered an impressive doubleheader sweep over College of the Canyons on Tuesday at Nancy Kelly Field, using a combination of timely offense and dominant pitching performances to secure 7-5 and 1-0 victories.
In the opener, the Falcons broke open a tightly contested game with a five-run sixth inning to earn a 7-5 win. Trailing 3-2, Cerritos responded in a big way as Marley Cortez tied the game with an RBI single before Luna Villa gave the Falcons the lead with a two-run hit. Carissa Amaya capped the rally with a two-run single up the middle, extending the lead to 7-3.
Earlier in the game, Cerritos got on the board in the fourth inning when Villa scored on an error, and regained the lead in the fifth on Villa's RBI double. Despite College of the Canyons collecting 12 hits, the Falcons made the most of their opportunities and came through in key moments.
Tatyana Cortez earned the complete game victory in the circle, striking out eight and working through multiple jams to improve to 20-5 on the season. Offensively, Villa led the way with three RBI, while Marley Cortez tallied three hits and scored twice. Amaya added two RBI in the win.
Game two turned into a pitcher's duel, with both teams held scoreless through seven innings. Cerritos pitchers Mia Star Miramontes and Tatyana Cortez combined to shut out the Cougars, limiting them to nine hits while stranding multiple runners.
Miramontes set the tone with 5.1 strong innings, allowing no runs and keeping the Canyons offense in check. Cortez entered in relief and closed the door, earning her second win of the day.
With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the eighth inning, Marley Cortez delivered the decisive moment. She launched a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning to right field, lifting the Falcons to a 1-0 walk-off victory and completing the sweep.
Cortez led the Falcons offensively in game two with three of the team's five hits, including the game-winning home run.
