It was Sophomore Day for the Cerritos College women's soccer team on Tuesday against Los Angeles Harbor College. The sophomores stepped up and accounted for five of the team's goals in a 6-0 South Coast Conference South Division win. The Falcons currently sit in second place in the SCC South Division with two games remaining and will travel to Los Angeles City College on Friday for a 2:00 p.m. game.
Sophomores Jessica Arroyo (Buena Park HS) scored twice, while Jenna Santos (St. Joseph HS) had a goal and two assists. The team opened up a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the game. Santos threaded a thru pass to Arroyo for the first goal in the third minute, with sophomore Sariah Sanchez (La Sierra HS) giving the team a 2-0 advantage when she finished a crossing pass from sophomore Ariana Rivera (Long Beach Millikan HS).
Rivera showed her offensive skills in the 14th minute when she dribbled through the Seahawks defense and fired a low, line drive shot into the back of the net, while Arroyo matched that skillset, as she went coast to coast for her second goal of the game before halftime. The two goals by Arroyo now gives her a team-leading six on the season.
In the second half, sophomore Maiya Garcia (Gahr HS) had a chance to add to the lead when she lined up for a penalty kick in the 55th minute. However, her shot attempt missed the cage, as it sailed over the crossbar.
That didn't slow down the Cerritos offense, with Santos scoring in the 61st minute when she went in 1v1 with LA Harbor goalkeeper Milly Salas and put away her second of two goals. Freshman Samantha Vazquez (Buena Park HS) closed out the scoring in the 76th minute when she scored her first goal of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Paulina Prescott (Downey HS) made three saves and earned her third shutout of the season.
