At the 3C2A State Championships at San Mateo College over the weekend, the Cerritos College men's track and field team compiled 48 team points to come in sixth place. The Falcons had one individual champion, while they also had six All-Americans, as those who finished in the top four of their events were honored.

Sophomore Terrence Williams, who entered the state championships with the fastest time in the state (46.68) in the 400 meters, was able to win the event by posting a time of 47.93 and was the lone runner to turn in a sub-48.00 time. Williams also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished in a close third place. He was joined by Te'Quan Chatman (Bishop Verot, FL HS), Sebastian Lopez (Downey HS) and Konnor Handy (St. John Bosco HS) to record a time of 3:16.48 and were edged out of second place by the time of 3:16.14 turned in by Riverside City College.

Also coming in with the fastest time in the state, sophomore 1500-meter runner Joshua Melendez (St. Paul HS) fell short of his goal of winning a state championship and had to settle for third place with a time of 4:02.46. It was well off the season-best time of 3:51.80 he set last month. On the other side of the coin, Juan Flores (Warren HS) saved his best for last, as he recorded a time of 9:34.17 to come in third place in the 3000-meter steeplechase. It was four seconds faster than his personal best time and moved him into fourth place on the college's all-time top five list.

The Falcons other relay team, the 4x100-meter squad, posted a sixth place time of 41.69 and consisted of Xavier Williams (Paramount HS), Lopez, Chatman and Ethan Rosborough (Narbonne HS). Lopez also finished eighth in the 100-meters in a time of 10.63, while distance runner Robert Guerrero (Long Beach Poly HS) earned All-American honors with his fourth place time of 15:38.00 in the 5000 meters. Also placing for Cerritos was 800-meter runner Aiden Vigil, who finished in fifth place in a time of 1:55.88.

A tough first few events for decathlete Luke Johnson (Paramount HS) had him sitting in 12th place. But a resurgence on the second day saw him catapult himself into fourth place after the 10 events with 6023 points. Also a competitor in the javelin - where he came in seventh place at 51.47 meters - he scored the most points during the decathlon with 615 points after a throw of 51.80 meters. He also had the second best high jump at 1.88 meters for 696 points and was fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.95 meters, good for 603 points. The twin pairing of Blake Gross and Brock Gross of San Mateo College took the top two spots in the final standings.
