As the Cerritos College volleyball team gears up for the start of their South Coast Conference South Division schedule, the team posted a three-game sweep over host East Los Angeles College, 25-19, 25-23, 15-16 on Friday. The SCC crossover match improved the team's season record to 5-6, as they will host El Camino College at 6:00 p.m.next Wednesday in their first divisional match.

Playing shorthanded once again, the team activated freshman Bethany Folden (Christian Light Education, VA HS), who was slated to serve as a red-shirt in order to have more depth.

In the first set, the team jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, with freshman Jordin Lewis (Warren HS) posting a pair of kills. Although they never trailed in the set, the Falcons opened a 17-11 lead, but had to withstand a late Huskies rally. They finished off East LA in the first set on a kill by sophomore Evelyn Soto-Castro (Schurr HS), who moved from setter to outside hitter.

Unlike the first set, the Falcons had to come back to post a win in the second set, as they trailed by as many as four points (17-13). Five Huskies attack errors, as well as a kill from Lewis and a service ace from freshman Danna Higuera (Gahr HS) helped the team pull ahead, 19-18. The teams traded points the rest of the way, with Cerritos benefitting from multiple attack errors and scored the winning point on a service error.

The Falcons opened a quick lead in the third set and were able to score multiple points in a row to open up a 15-8 advantage. Soto-Castro contributed four kills and a service ace in taking the lead, with another kill from Soto-Castro and freshman Elizabeth Beltran (Santa Fe HS) providing enough offense to come away with the win.

Lewis led the team with 15 kills and added 12 digs, while Soto-Castro turned in 12 kills, 10 digs and three service aces for the Falcons. Recently activated setter Minerva Rodriguez (Gahr HS) shared the setting duties with Emma Rivera (Mayfair HS) and the two combined for 33 assists and 11 digs, while Beltran posted nine kills
