Volleyball: Falcons earn second sweep in a row; look to hang on to second place

For the second match in a row, the Cerritos College volleyball team made quick work of their opponent, as they swept past Compton College on Wednesday night, 25-6, 25-6, 25-8. The win was the fourth in the last five matches for the Falcons (12-9, 5-2), who are currently in second place in the South Coast Conference South Division. The team will close out their home schedule on Friday at 6:00 p.m. when they host division leading Long Beach City College (14-8, 6-0).

In the first set against the Coyotes (1-16, 0-7), Cerritos opened an early 10-2 lead and never looked back. Sophomore Margaret Norton (La Mirada HS) served six consecutive points to help open the lead, which included one of the team's seven service aces in the set. Freshman Jordin Lewis (Warren HS) also drove home two straight kills, and added two more in opening up a 16-4 advantage. A pair of service aces later in the set helped close it out, with freshman Elizabeth Beltran (Santa Fe HS) contributing a pair of kills, while freshman setter Emma Rivera (Mayfair HS) posted the final kill in the set.

Falcons honored their sophomores before their match against Compton Five straight points, including four kills from Beltran, opened the second set. Lewis, Beltran and freshman Tiffany Teats (Warren HS) all contributed to an attack that the Coyotes could not handle. Points scored in bunches enabled the second set to finish at 25-6, just like the first set. The teams traded the first four points in the third set until kills from Rivera, freshman Danna Higuera (Gahr HS) and Lewis, along with a service ace from freshman Roselyn Tobie (Maxine Waters HS) helped the team start to pull away. Leading 11-6, the Falcons saw Rivera serve 10 straight points, which included a pair of aces. The match ended on a kill from Lewis.

Lewis and Beltran combined for 25 kills, while Teats added six kills. Tobie led the back row with 23 digs and also served up seven assists and three aces, while Rivera and freshman Minerva Rodriguez (Gahr HS) combined for 29 assists, with Rivera also recording five kills. Higuera totaled two kills, five digs and two aces, while the team finished with 14 aces on the night.
